5 lockdown phrases we need to banish forever
As a former journalist for The Daily Telegraph, I can’t help but notice the frankly annoying lockdown phrases and ridiculous things we keep hearing and getting told during this global pandemic that are either just wrong, overkill or simply put, irritating. Here’s what I’ll be putting in the Coronavirus Rubbish Bin as soon as they allow me to turn up at the Dump without having to book an appointment.
- Unprecedented
If I hear this word one more time… I get that the pandemic caused by coronavirus was seemingly unprecedented. Except it wasn’t; the 1918 flu pandemic killed 100 million people worldwide, according to some estimates.
In any case, we’ve been dealing with COVID now for nearly 5 months. It’s no longer a brand new situation and is actually our new normal. Which leads me onto…
2. New Normal
OK it was fun to muse about this for a while, like I did in an earlier blog post. But please, it is not normal to talk about the New Normal as if it is normal. What is normal anyway?
3. “Due to unusually high demand on our stock because of COVID, your item may take longer to arrive”.
It seems like every website out there is saying this, even hiding behind this, at the moment. I get it, for items where we all need them – like food and toiletries – that demand is still high even though the shops are back open. But the other day I ordered some pegs… PEGS for goodness sake, and the website was claiming that due to unprecedented demand (unprecedented… again… grr) the pegs may take longer to arrive than normal. Why on earth are pegs in high demand, can someone tell me? Is it not just that half your staff are not in at the moment and so there’s no-one around to deal with the request?
It’s not about demand but about supply, actually.
Just no.
5. Stay safe.
What does that even mean?
Let’s face it, Coronavirus is very much here to stay, it hasn’t gone anywhere and we’re all having to get used to it as much as possible.
In my line of work, I’m so grateful and excited to have my baby photography studio in Muswell Hill reopened and the calendar almost full of bookings again, from newborn to maternity to sitting sessions.
We wear masks. We wash our hands. We sanitise. We stick to the rules. We’re really careful not to swap germs unnecessarily. Thinking about it, didn’t all baby photographers do that anyway?!
